Tectonic plates
Tectonic plates are like the skin of earth. These plates make the top layer of earth called the lithosphere under the lithosphere is the asthenosphere the asthenosphere is a layer of molten rock. All the continents were separated because of tectonic plates. Seven of the major tectonic plates include, African, Antarctic, Eurasin, North American, South American and India-Australian. Tectonic plates are around 62 miles thick. There are two main types of tectonic plates: oceanic and continental. Divergent Boundaries - A divergent boundary is one where two plates are getting pushed apart. The area on land where the boundary occurs is called a rift. New land is formed by magma pushing up from the mantle and cooling as it reaches the surface. Divergent Boundaries - A divergent boundary is one where two plates are getting pushed apart.
